I had a request for guidance on how I put together Caden’s Costume. It was really pretty simple. We had a few things going on this weekend and I focused on one more that the other leaving me scrambling last minute to get Caden’s costume together. I bought the light up Marshmello head on Groupon earlier this year and then Caden mentioned this is what he wanted to be for Halloween. (The link is in bold above) I bought this for fun since it was so inexpensive. It is made of foam that came folded flat. You untape the circle top and roll it to double stick on the face and then add a foam tape closure in the back. It comes with the battery pack that does different light patterns. Cheap but again, will work for fun. I’ve also seen some on eBay and Etsy. He had the idea of making a turntable and adding music to it, I just had to make it happen.
I didn’t know if I wanted to buy a costume or just go with white pants and shirt. When I finally started looking last minute it was more difficult to find white clothing items that I thought. I knew Spirit Halloween Store had several Marshmello costumes available. I went with the jumpsuit version. I had to make the trip to 2 Spirit Halloween stores to find his size. They have a 20% off one item coupon I used on the suit. Just an FYI the suit came with a ½ Marshmello head but it did not light up. I got the coupon in my email from signing up last year. I also bought a microphone that changed colors with music in a separate transaction so the 20% off would be for the more expensive suit.
I had taken the Literati box I recently received since this was the perfect size thin and as wide as his body. I used some fast-drying acrylic paint we had in our craft box. I painted 3 sides black and took a plate to trace a silver circle on top off to the side. I tried to make buttons and knobs just to have some character. Then I wrote DJ Marshmello on front. I then poked a hole and make it just wide enough to slide the microphone in. In order to activate the microphone, you had to hold down the button so I put a rubber band on the microphone before sliding it in so we could slide it up on the button when we wanted to keep it pressed.
I took some white ribbon and put it in the middle of the inside sides angled back and taped it. We could open and close the box as needed since it had tabs that slid in. We put a small lightweight Bluetooth speaker inside the box. We connected the speaker to my phone and I was able to ask Alexa on my phone to shuffle songs by Marshmello. Now he could be a DJ and I could control the songs and volume. His microphone danced to the music which was really fun. For more character I added some glow sticks to the sides and had one hanging on Caden’s chest so it looked like his light for his turntable.
His costume was a hit! We had to walk past a long line of people to get into the event and he got so many compliments from all ages. Thankfully it was a cool night so he wasn’t hot. Hope you enjoyed and maybe got some inspiration for this year or future years.
