Repurposing Jerseys

I am in the process of redoing my son’s room to a tween-ish style room.  My son wanted to go with a soccer themed room.  Caden has played soccer since he was 4.  The soccer club recently changed their uniform so now I have a bunch of old jerseys with no real purpose so I decided to incorporate them in his room décor.  I recently painted his room from a khaki color to grey.  I measured the shirt numbers and decided to do the front of one and back of two.  I had a space above the curtains that I wanted to add the frames too.  I really should have bought the 10×10 in frames for the wall space but I bought the 12×12 for the space needed on the front jersey.

I bought these frames from Michael’s that had a shadow box space.  I was going to just buy a frame and cut the jerseys but this allowed me to keep them intact folded under.  Another reason I bought these frames was they were on sale buy one get one free so I bought a 2-pack and got a 2-pack free!  $30 for 4 frames not too bad. They also come in white, black, gold, red.

This project took me all of 30 minutes!  I ironed the shirts with a cloth on top to get out any wrinkles I could.  I then had some craft paper that was 12×12 thick cardstock.  Since I didn’t feel this was sturdy enough, I cut the flaps of a box to support the paper.  The flaps were not the exact size which was fine it was just for extra support.  I had to cut the about ¼ inch off 2 sides (top and side) to fit in the frame snugly.  The inside of the frame was slightly smaller than 12×12.   I put the cardstock with the box support inside the shirt and positioned it how I wanted it holding it tightly together in the back.  Put it in the frame and then check to see if there are any sides you need to smooth out.  Gently tug the fabric to get any wrinkles out if needed.  I loosely bunched up the rest of the jersey and added the back and it held it all together.  I had to make sure the corners were pressed to the glass at the front.  That was the only area the cardstock was not the strongest.

Finish with the remaining jerseys and make sure you are happy with the alignment and then hang them.  This was a fun way to add his work into his room.
